Location|Charleston, SC
Program|Performing Arts School
The challenge presented in this project is to build a performing arts school in Charleston, SC. The whole structure must be 15 feet above the ground due to potential storms surges.
When observing Charleston at a pedestrian level I noticed “gaps” throughout the city. The “gaps” in the commercial areas were different from the “gaps” in the residential areas. Usually, the residential voids were framing private spaces such as a backyard or garden. The commercial voids were between the buildings and ranged between 5 inches and 5 feet wide, they were open for the public to move through if possible. The entire design focuses on framing the private spaces and defining a distinct threshold through the entire system. In response to the flood line, outdoor social spaces are programed below.
